Leslie Salgado

Critical AI Scholar · Communication Designer & Strategist

I am a practitioner and researcher in Communication, and Studies of Science & Technology. With a PhD in Communication and Media Studies from the University of Calgary, my work focuses on Responsible AI, policy, and science and technology communication. I examine how AI narratives shape policy, public understanding, and the broader structures of power that govern our digital lives, combining critical theory with digital methods to ask uncomfortable questions about technology and society.

Passionate about teaching, I have taught and assisted courses on new media, rhetoric, digital storytelling, algorithms and communication, and I am committed to helping students develop the tools to both use and interrogate emerging technologies.

As an experienced communication professional, I translate complex information into clear, compelling visual and written communication — building interfaces, data visualizations, and editorial content that make ideas accessible without sacrificing rigour. I have worked for international organizations including UNESCO, OXFAM, and the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI), and write for public audiences on science, health, AI policy, and the social aspects of emerging technologies.

Communicating AI

Transparency, and Responsible Narratives

I'm convinced that clear communication should be an ethical principle in Responsible AI. In this context, clarity means embracing transparency in both, technological development and communication design. This perspective implies building trust in technologies that are actually trustworthy, and communicating the potential and downsides of these technologies. In the last years I have worked on pathways to communicate the challenges and benefits of AI-powered tools. My work in this area includes conferences presentations, a Box of Questions for Communicating AI for Health, a book chapter, a creative poster among others.
